Task-focused resource comparison

10 Services for Reviewing Trade Holding Times

Holding-time analysis requires a trade definition and unambiguous timestamps. Execution exports and journal groupings can describe different start and end events; the comparison helps you check that boundary before averaging durations.

Start with the task: Measure closed-trade durations without mixing in open or invalid records.

Five questions to compare

Criterion 1

Open versus transaction timestamps

Distinguish trade opening and closing from order creation or an individual fill. They may refer to different events.

Criterion 2

Explicit time zones

Use explicit time zones or UTC offsets. A local date display alone cannot establish elapsed time across systems.

Criterion 3

Multiple executions

Several executions can belong to one trade. Define grouping before choosing the opening and closing timestamps.

Criterion 4

Still-open records

A blank closing timestamp means still open. Do not assign an invented end time or zero duration.

Criterion 5

Trade grouping

Keep the trade-ID definition consistent. Duplicate IDs or mixed grouping rules can distort both the mean and median.

Put the comparison to work

Use a distinct trade ID and explicit-offset opening and closing timestamps. Blank closed_at means the trade is still open. Supply timestamps for your own defined trade grouping; individual execution times may need grouping before they represent one opening and one closing.

Three hypothetical closed trades last 45, 90 and 15 minutes. Total holding time is 150 minutes, the mean is 50 and the median is 45. Their timestamps explicitly use UTC. An additional open record is counted as open and contributes no duration to those closed-trade statistics.

Open Trade Holding-Time CSV Calculator

Elapsed time is measured between timestamps, not trading-session time or exposure-weighted duration. A closing time earlier than its opening time is invalid, and later repeated trade IDs are invalid. With no valid closed trades, duration averages say Not defined.
